Through a Glass Darkly

As we age, we are reminded

by the impartial cruelty of the mirror

that we are forced to find ourselves

all over again, if we ever did

in younger years, flattered by the glass.

What we were, we will never be

again, with or without glacial reflections,

what we are, we see through a glass

darkly or look at flattering photos

or seek for ourselves in others’ eyes.
